| Spinning Class Winter 2009 Beginning Spinning - High Whorl Spinning ………. $55.00 In this class the student will learn the techniques needed to spin a usable yarn on a High Whorl Spindle. The High Whorl Spindle is easier to spin on than the bottom whorl or drop spindles that are traditionally used in this country. The student will also learn how to scour and card the wool, different plying techniques and setting the twist. In this class we will be using various other spinning tools. This is a great class to take to try spinning without a big investment. Materials and handouts included ………….2 sessions/1.5 hours each Date: Time: 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Date: Time: 11:00am to 12:30pm. Beginning Wheel Spinning………… $125.00 In this class you will learn to spin a yarn that can be used for knitting, weaving and crocheting. The student will learn the techniques for the long draw method of spinning. The student will be instructed in how to oil and properly maintain a spinning wheel for ultimate performance. Other techniques taught in this class are: scouring the wool, carding, proper wheel tensioning, skeining the yarn and setting the twist. Several different methods of plying are taught. Materials and handouts included…………3 sessions/ 2hours each. Date: Monday Time: 11:00 to 1:00pm. Intermediate Wheel Spinning …………..$125.00 In this class the student will continue to refine the Long Draw method of spinning; in addition to learning spinning in the Fold technique. Discussion of the Classification of Wools and the Bradford Wool Count will enable the spinner to make proper choices of wool for knitting, weaving or crochet projects. The student will learn the different wheel drives and ratios, how to choose the right one for the wool and yarn weight you want to spin. The spinner will learn the use of the Wrap Per Inch Gauge (WPI) to determine yarn weight and yard per pound (ypp); comes in handy for planning projects. The plying technique, Navajo 3 ply, taking 1 bobbin of yarn and making 3ply yarn from it will be taught. Discussion and practice of different carding technique on a Drum Carder will round out the class. Wool Combing & Worsted Spinning ..............$110.00 There are only two basic type of yarn, woolen and worsted. In this class you will learn the techniques of fiber preparation and spinning to produce a worsted yarn. We will go step by step thru the process from choosing the wool, scouring the wool, combing using wool combs and the spinning technique to produce a lovely worsted yarn. We will discuss and use the different tools: Wool Combs, Pad, Diz, Viking Combs and Wool Hackle. We will also be color blending with the wool combs and wool hackle. Materials and Handouts included..................1 Session Date: Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm Cotton Spinning ...........$110.00 Have you ever tried spinning cotton and you just can't seem to get the hang of it? Or you heard that cotton is just too hard spin. No true, cotton is just spun different than wool. If you would like to master cotton spinning then this class is for you! You will learn the techniques to spin cotton. Learn how to properly set the adjustment of your spinning wheel and method for setting the twist in your cotton yarn. We will discuss the different type’s of cotton and their characteristics as well as sampling the various cottons. Materials and Handouts included..................1 Session Date: Time: 10:00am to 4:00pm Great Wheel Spinning ...........$95.00 Great Wheel, Walking Wheel, Muckle Wheel, High Wheel, Wool Wheel are just a few names given to this spindle wheel. If you have ever wanted to spin on a Walking Wheel this class is for you. You will learn the techniques for spinning on a spindle wheel using two type of spindle heads, a direct drive and Amos Minor . We will use various fibers; wool, cotton, alpaca just to name a few. Student will learn skeining and plying techniques for the Great Wheel. Students will have the opportunity to use other types of spindle wheels, there will be several kinds of charkhas, a T-Frame and treadled spindle wheels. We will discuss how to find and what to look for when buying a Great Wheel.
